I Was 49
- JuliaArts Julia
It is estimated that the most common age for women to be diagnosed with ADHD is late 30s to early 40s… (I was 49 when I sought my assessment.) Compared to age 7 for boys. 🤨
For every 1 woman diagnosed with autism, roughly 3 to 6 men are diagnosed.
Thousands of women remain undiagnosed, and many who try to explore diagnosis, or self identify and seek support, will be challenged and fight daily micro-aggressions.
So with the spread of awareness, although more steps are being taken to recognise and diagnose neurodivergent women, and people have more access to information than ever - it’s still a hard journey to get access to the right kind of support.
For themselves and for any Young People in their lives!
Half a lifetime of masking and any associated hidden neurodivergent distress can really affect us.
Then add fighting for, paying for, and working through applications for assessments (that don’t automatically give support - that’s the next journey and new battles!)
Imagine then having to figure out all this by yourself. For yourself and others.
You know, the thing that doctors and educational psychologists studied for and are paid and trained to do…but just are not in anything like high enough numbers within society to be the main route to better outcomes.
One of the best ways we can start to take some of the weight off the shoulders of young, neurodiverse girls is by educating them, their peers, and the adults around them.
